New retailer announced for one of Lexington’s oldest shopping plazas
A discount retailer originally known for coats will open a second Lexington location with the latest site at the South Park shopping center on Nicholasville Road.
Burlington Stores, which has a location on Richmond Road, plans to open Sept. 18 in the space formerly occupied by Toys R Us, which closed all of its 800 stores in 2018.
Headquartered in New Jersey and once known as Burlington Coat Factory, the off-price retailer has more than 739 stores across the country.
South Park, on the corner of Nicholasville and New Circle roads, is one of the oldest shopping malls in Lexington. Property records indicate it was originally built in 1978.
In 2019, it was announced a Dave & Busters had selected South Park for a potential Lexington site. Construction was slated to begin in early 2020, but there has been no activity on the site. The future of the 30,500-square-foot restaurant, bar and family entertainment center is up in the air.
In July, Dave & Busters announced it had canceled nine leases for restaurants that were going to open in 2021. Kaden Companies, which owns South Park and declined to comment on the status of Dave & Busters in July, lists the 7-acre Dave & Busters site as available on its website.
