Thriller parade is canceled. But Lexington kids can trick-or-treat with these caveats
The popular annual Thriller parade held in downtown Lexington during Halloween for roughly two decades has been canceled over COVID-19.
Mayor Linda Gorton delivered the news Friday while spelling out what residents should do to celebrate the season safely. The guidance followed recommendations from Gov. Andy Beshear released Thursday.
Trick-or-treating will occur from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. But individually wrapped candy or candy in individual goody bags should be placed on a table, driveway or porch for children to pick up themselves, according to the guidance released by the city. The challenges: Don’t use a bowl that trick-or-treaters can put their hands into and don’t hand the candy out by hand.
Halloween masks aren’t enough to protect kids. Protective face coverings should be worn, according to the mayor’s press release. Social distancing should be observed. Other tips: Trick-or-treat only in family groups of 10 or fewer people, stay in your neighborhood and carry along some hand sanitizer.
“We want our children and community to have fun, but be safe,” Gorton said.
In addition to the Thriller parade, the city has canceled its annual Halloween festival and Little Goblins Galore at McConnell Springs.
Residents were advised to avoid or not hold trunk-or-treat events, costume parties, haunted houses, hayrides or other activities that could draw a crowd.
“We want to provide safe opportunities for the community to enjoy Halloween activities,” the mayor said. “We have had to cancel some events, but we are making sure there are fun alternatives available.”
Organized events include the following (protective masks and social distancing required).
- Thriller Zombie dance lessons at the Moondance Amphitheater Oct. 5-24
- Wicked wonders variety show (Oct. 23-25) and Dia de los Muertos performance (Nov. 1) at Moondance Amphitheater
- Jack-o-lantern trail at McConnell Springs Oct. 28-30
- Halloween printmaking workshop at Artworks at Carver School Oct. 16-17
