Updated: No injuries reported from Lexington business fire on North Limestone

Lexington firefighters battled a large fire at a commercial building on North Limestone Friday morning.

The fire broke out just after 7 a.m. in the 1400 block of North Limestone, according to Battalion Chief Jordan Saas. When firefighters arrived, there was heavy fire in the building.

Firefighters reported no one was inside the building or injured from the fire.

The cause and origin of the fire were undetermined and under investigation.

According to Saas, the building was filled with debris, which made containing the fire more challenging. Crews had to make forced entry because windows and doors were locked.

Saas said a second alarm was called. That brought more personnel and equipment to work on the fire.

It took roughly 45 minutes to control the blaze.

“We’ve made a good knockdown on the fire. At this time, it is deemed under control,” Saas said at 8 a.m. “Crews have put in a ventilation hole in the roof, which allows the heat and the hot gasses to escape. Visibility inside the building is good. Crews are reporting that they can see all the way through the building from the front to the back.”

The roof of the building was unstable on one side, potentially from the fire inside, so firefighters had to be cautious on that portion, Saas said.

The fire occurred next to a local liquor store, Jackson Wine & Spirits.
