Update: Teen charged with murder in Thanksgiving homicide

A teen has been charged with murder in a Thanksgiving night shooting on Sandalwood Drive, according to Lexington police.

Officers responded to a call about a disorder with shots fired at a residence in the 400 block of Sandalwood Drive at approximately 8:37 p.m. Thursday, according to Lt. Daniel Burnett.

Eric Sweat, 36, was found dead when officers arrived, police said. But Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn’s office said Sweat was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound at 11:20 p.m. at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.

The 17-year-old male suspect was taken to the Fayette Regional Juvenile Detention Center. Names of juvenile suspects aren’t initially released.

The homicide is Lexington’s 34th of the year, tying the record set in 2020.
