The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department reported 550 new COVID-19 cases, resetting the record for most COVID cases reported in Lexington in a single day.

The previous record was set the day prior. The city’s seven-day rolling average is now up to 295 new cases per day, a figure that continues to climb to peak heights.

The health department is continuing to urge people to get vaccinated. It said over 50% of the COVID cases from December were among unvaccinated people, and 80% of COVID hospitalizations by Lexington residents were among those who are not vaccinated.

Vaccines are available at the health department’s Public Health Clinic on Newtown Pike every Monday, Wednesday and Friday via same-day appointments. Call 859-288-2483 to schedule an appointment.

The surge in cases comes as Fayette County Public Schools will be back in session Tuesday. Students will return to school with the same mask requirement that’s been in place all school year, and Superintendent Demetrus Liggins said in a letter that more information about the school district’s response to the rising cases will come out Monday evening.

Liggins also said cases among students and staff have risen, but not at the same rate as the community overall.

“Recognizing that COVID-19 will be a part of our lives for the foreseeable future, please know that the health and safety of our students, staff, and families remain our top priority,” Liggins said in the letter.
