MLK Day march still on for Monday; program will be virtual due to COVID

Due to a spike in coronavirus cases, Lexington’s Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom March and celebration will look different this year.

The annual Freedom March will start at 10 a.m. at Central Bank Center. The line up to start the march will begin at 9 a.m. at Exhibit Hall C. of Central Bank Center.

The march will go through much of downtown Lexington.

Lexington-Fayette Urban County Councilman James Brown, one of the co-chairs of the event, said the program that typically follows the march will be virtual due to health and safety reasons.

Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia will be the keynote speaker. Warnock is also the pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Martin Luther King Jr. and his father were both pastors of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Brown said.

The program will begin at noon and can be viewed on the You Tube page of the Lexington MLK Day Celebration at www.youtube.com/channel/UCmPv9RzFkq--GNSJbJeVbLw.

The annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy is co-sponsored by the University of Kentucky and the city of Lexington.
