Fayette County Detention Center inmate dies in custody
An inmate at the Fayette County Detention Center died on Thursday, according to jail Major Matt LeMonds.
Gregory Lynn Smith was pronounced dead at 12:27 p.m. Thursday at a local area hospital, per LeMonds. Smith had been in the hospital since Jan. 13 after Corizon Medical staff members, the medical service provider for the jail, determined that Smith needed to go to the hospital for evaluation.
Foul play is non suspected in Smith’s death, but the Lexington Police Department and Fayette County Coroner’s Office are investigating, which is normal in the case of an in-custody death, LeMonds said.
Smith had been in jail since Jan. 9 for state charges of trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, driving under the influence and persistent felony offender.
