Mayor Gorton: Masks no longer required in Lexington city offices

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton lifted the requirement for visitors to wear masks in city offices Tuesday.

City employees will also no longer have to wear masks in city government buildings.

Throughout the pandemic, the city has had mask requirements for city buildings depending on the number of coronavirus cases. The current mask mandate took effect in August around the same time as the Delta variant surge.

Gorton said during a press conference Tuesday Fayette County’s rolling seven-day average for COVID-19 cases was below 100 and the positivity rate is now around 6 percent.

Fayette County’s vaccination rate for those 18 years and older is now at nearly 74 percent, Gorton said.

Visitors and employees who feel more comfortable wearing a mask can do so, Gorton said. City division directors in more challenging environments, like the jail or the senior center, will consult with the mayor’s office and decide whether to continue to wear masks in their area, Gorton said.

The move comes one day after Gov. Andy Beshear lifted a similar mask requirement for all state offices and state employees.
