Fire causes road shutdown, destroys a Lexington resident’s shed off Old Richmond Road

A fire off I-75 in Lexington caused a road shutdown and claimed a Lexington resident’s shed Tuesday morning, according to fire department officials.

The Lexington Fire Department responded to the scene of the structure fire off Old Richmond Road just after 10:30 a.m. The fire was already significant when firefighters arrived, Maj. Jon Ott said.

According to Ott, the owner of the property came out of his house and noticed his equipment shed engulfed in flames. He subsequently called 911 and opened up the doors to the shed before firefighters arrived.

The roof had already caved in by the time firefighters arrived, Ott said.

“We did a defensive fire from the outside, that means nobody went in,” Ott said.

Firefighters got the fire knocked down rather quickly once units arrived on scene. Ott said no one was injured but the shed was a total loss.

As of 11:30 a.m., the roadway was shutdown in both directions while firefighters were cleaning up the scene, according to the Lexington Traffic Management Center.

The traffic management center said the roadway reopened at 1:18 p.m.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
