Small fire damages building in downtown Lexington, causes road shutdown

A small fire to the side of a building in downtown Lexington caused a brief shut down of North Broadway during the Wednesday morning commute.

The fire was reported to the Lexington Fire Department around 7:30 a.m., Battalion Chief Chris Ward said. When the first crews arrived, the side of the Milward Funeral Directors building was on fire, Ward said.

Ward said the fire was likely caused by the mulch on the side of the building. Firefighters contained the fire quickly and prevented it from spreading throughout the building.

No injuries were reported, according to Ward.

North Broadway was shut down in both directions while firefighters put out the fire. As of 8:05 a.m., one lane of outbound traffic was open.

The roadway fully reopened at 8:43 a.m., according to the Lexington Traffic Management Center.
