Pilot uninjured after ‘experimental plane’ crashes at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington
A private plane pilot managed to avoid injury despite being involved in a crash at Blue Grass Airport Monday, according to an airport spokesperson.
Amy Caudill, a spokesperson for the airport, said a single-engine “experimental plane” was landing on the airport’s shorter runway at approximately 7:15 p.m. Monday when the crash occurred. Only the pilot was onboard the plane and he did not suffer any injuries, according to Caudill.
The airport’s public safety team responded and determined that police and fire personnel were not needed, according to Caudill. The plane was towed off the runway.
As is protocol when a plane crashes, all operations at the airport were halted during the initial assessment of the accident, Caudill said. She said the main runway was barely down while the smaller runway was shut down for about two hours.
Caudill said the shorter runway is generally used by private aviation aircraft, and this plane was a private aircraft.
“Experimental aircraft” can be a wide range of things, but it typically means it was constructed by a private builder, Caudill said. Caudill couldn’t advise if that was the case for the plane that crashed, as the airport’s only responsibility was to tow the plane off the runway.
The pilot of the plane declined to speak with media about the crash, so details as to what caused the crash were not made available. The airplane is based in Lexington, according to Caudill.
