Vacant home in downtown Lexington suffers damage from structure fire

The Lexington Fire Department is investigating what started a fire at a vacant home on Deweese Street early Friday morning.

The fire was reported to the fire department by a third-party caller at approximately 6:30 a.m., according to firefighters. Maj. Shane Poynter said arriving firefighters found a fire on the first floor.

The fire eventually spread to the second floor and into the attic, according to Poynter. The fire was extinguished in roughly 10 minutes but it did cause damage to the home.

No one was injured, Poynter said. The home is undergoing renovations.

Poynter said the corner of Deweese Street and E. Short Street will be blocked off until approximately 9 a.m. to allow investigators to determine the cause of the fire, which was unknown initially.

Firefighters battled another blaze early Friday

The fire department also responded to another structure fire in the 700 block of Charles Avenue early Friday morning, according to Maj. Jessica Bowman with the Lexington Fire Department. The fire happened around 4 a.m. and first-responding firefighters found heavy smoke and flames upon arrival.

Bowman said no injuries were reported but the back side of the structure suffered heavy damage. A neighboring home also had some siding melted due to exposure from the fire.

Both of the homes were vacant at the time of the fire, according to Bowman.
