Updated: Lexington garbage pick up moved to early morning this week due to heat

As Lexington braces for a heat wave that will send temperatures soaring past 90 degrees for much of the week, city officials are moving garbage pick up times to avoid the scorching temperatures.

Lexington’s Division of Waste Management will adjust its collection times Tuesday through Friday this week and will begin trash pick up 30 minutes early. That means pick ups will begin around 5 a.m. or possibly earlier, city officials said.

Rumpke, which also serves Fayette County and several surrounding counties, is also moving up its trash pick up to the early morning hours to avoid the extreme heat.

“The high temperatures and heat indexes predicted for the remainder of the week make our job more dangerous,” said Adam Rumpke, region vice president. “To help protect our team from heat-related illnesses and ensure timely service, we must adjust our operations.”

Residents are strongly encouraged to put out trash and recycling bins the night before scheduled collection.

According to WKYT, the Lexington Herald-Leader’s reporting partner, highs are expected to remain in the 90s through most of the week. A heat advisory has been issued for Tuesday and Wednesday.
