One person sent to the hospital after house near UK’s campus catches on fire
One person was sent to the hospital Monday afternoon after a house fire near the University of Kentucky’s campus badly damaged a home, according to the Lexington Fire Department.
The report of a structure fire on the 300 block of Aylesford Place came in a little after 1:30 p.m., according to Maj. Jessica Bowman with the fire department. Bowman said the fire was in advanced conditions when firefighters first arrived.
Initially no injuries were reported, but nearly two hours after the fire was reported, a person was sent to the hospital for further evaluation, Bowman said. The person’s injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Bowman said it was a one-alarm fire, but additional units were called to the scene to help assist firefighters needing a break. The fire got into the void spaces, making it more difficult for firefighters to contain the flames.
Just before 3 p.m., Bowman said the bulk of the fire was knocked down.
“On a day like today, firefighters with all the extra gear, it’s easy to get overheated,” Bowman said. “For the safety of our members, we added several additional units so we can rotate companies out regularly and keep them calm so they can have an opportunity to hydrate and rehab before going back in for their next assignment.”
The structure was a multi-family unit that featured six different apartments. The Red Cross was asked to help the victims from the fire.
It’s unknown if the structure is a complete loss.
“We call the Red Cross anytime that there’s a structure fire where occupants are displaced,” Bowman said. “The Red Cross is a great community partner. They can replace medications that got lost in the fire. They can get families just basics to get them back on their feet.”
