A family pet died in a structure fire on Wednesday at the 100 block of Manitoba Lane in Lexington, authorities said.

Fire crews were dispatched and found light smoke coming from the basement of a two-story home. According to Lexington Fire Department Major Jessica Bowman, crews made entry into the home, located and extinguished the fire in the basement laundry room.

While the home was not occupied at the time of the incident, there were two dogs in the house. According to Bowman, firefighters provided oxygen and other medical treatment to both animals, but one dog died as a result of smoke inhalation. No people were reported injured or sent to a hospital.

Fire investigators will look into the “origin and cause” of the incident, according to Bowman.
