A major widening project on a 6-mile section of Interstate 64 and Interstate 75 will begin Tuesday, state transportation officials said.

The long-planned widening of the busy interstates on Lexington’s north side will up the number of lanes from three to four lanes in each direction between Newtown and Paris pikes.

The area has seen both a steady increase in congestion and accidents over the past several years, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials said.

“A review of crash data from the Kentucky State Police data base for this section of the interstate also shows that the number of crashes has increased every year since 2012,” a release from the cabinet said.

Traffic on that section of road is expected to exceed 130,000 vehicles per day by 2040, transportation officials said. That’s significantly more than the current three lanes in that area can handle.

The $41.6 million project will not be completed until Nov. 2024.

Transportation officials said they will release updates on upcoming lane closures tied to the widening project.
