Thanks to hefty loans, Kloiber has big fundraising lead over Gorton heading into Nov. 8

Lexington-Fayette Urban County Councilman David Kloiber has a substantial fundraising lead over incumbent Mayor Linda Gorton in the race to be Lexington’s next mayor largely thanks to hefty personal loans to his campaign.

The latest Kentucky Registry of Election Finance reports show Kloiber has raised $644,055 with a big chunk of that coming from personal loans —$632,916.

Kloiber, who runs his family’s foundation that focuses on education and technology, gave himself a $45,000 loan this reporting period. In total he raised $49,300 for the reporting period that ended Oct. 24. He has spent it on television and other advertising, according to campaign finance reports. Heading into the Nov. 8 general election, he has $28,049 left to spend.

Gorton has raised $152,860 so far and raised $45,560 for the reporting period that ended Oct. 24. Gorton has $62,845 left to spend.

There have been no independent polls in the nonpartisan race.

Gorton received 71% of the vote in the four-way May primary. Kloiber came in second with 14%.
