Updated: One person dead after serious accident in Lexington near I-64
One person has died as a result of a serious accident on Haley Pike near I-64 in Lexington Friday, according to police.
The accident happened around 6:45 a.m. on Haley Pike near the bridge that goes over I-64, according to Lt. Daniel Burnett with the Lexington Police Department. It was a two-vehicle collision.
The victim, 55-year-old Geoffrey Culbertson, was taken to a hospital where he later died, Burnett said. The Fayette County Coroner’s Office declared Culbertson dead at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital at 7:49 a.m. from multiple blunt force injuries.
There was one other person involved in the crash but they were not injured, according to Burnett.
A preliminary investigation by the collision reconstruction unit determined that the driver who died pulled off of I-64 onto the off ramp and failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of Haley Pike, colliding with the other vehicle, Burnett said.
One of the vehicles involved suffered heavy damage and firefighters had to use entrapment tools to rescue the occupant, according to Burnett.
Haley Pike was shut down while the collision reconstruction unit investigated the scene. At 9:43 a.m. the Lexington Traffic Management Center said the road has reopened.
It’s unclear if weather played a factor in the collision, Burnett said.
