Here’s why you’ll see another Fayette County property tax bill in your mailbox
Fayette County residents are getting an additional property tax bill from the sheriff’s office as a result of a property tax rate increase approved by the school board.
With a 4-1 vote in September, board members approved a rate that will go from 80.8 cents to 83.3 cents per $100 of assessed value. In a social media post in October, Fayette PVA David O’Neill said taxpayers would receive an additional tax bill for the difference between the two tax rates. The difference would be an additional 4.8 cents per $100 in value or approximately $100 for the median valued home of $200,000, he said.
As a result of the change, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has mailed supplemental property tax bills corresponding to property tax rate changes approved by the Fayette County Board of Education.
Under Kentucky law, the sheriff collects and distributes all supplemental Fayette County property tax bills.
School district officials have said the increase would both provide revenue for district general operations and add a dedicated revenue stream for school construction and renovation.
Supplemental property tax payments received or postmarked by January 31, 2023, will receive a 2% discount. Payments received or postmarked by February 28, 2023, will be paid at face value and will avoid penalties. Payments received after March 1, 2023, will include penalties, according to a news release.
Taxpayers can pay in person at the sheriff’s office located in Suite 236 in the Fayette District Court building, by mail, or online through the sheriff’s office website.
Taxpayers can also pay in person at any Lexington Republic Bank location with their payment coupon through January 31, 2023.
Taxpayers who did not receive their supplemental bill during the first week of January should contact the Office of Sheriff Property Tax Division at 859-252-1771 to request a duplicate copy.
