Pedestrian struck by car, injured near UK campus was a student, university confirms

A University of Kentucky student was struck by a vehicle on South Limestone Monday morning, authorities confirmed.

The crash happened around 11 a.m. Monday. Lt. Samantha Moore with the Lexington Police Department said a vehicle was going inbound on South Limestone near Prall Street when a pedestrian stepped out in front of the vehicle.

The victim, a woman in her early 20s according to Moore, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

UK spokespeople confirmed the pedestrian was a student, and said the Lexington Police Department is handling the investigation.

It’s unknown if the pedestrian was in a crosswalk when the collision occurred, according to Moore. The driver is not expected to face any charges.

The collision reconstruction unit was not called out to the scene, according to Moore. The roadway was briefly shut down at 11:18 a.m. and the Lexington Traffic Management Center reported it reopening at 11:26 a.m.

According to Lexington police traffic data, there were 72 pedestrian accidents between January and July in 2022. That number was down 10% from the same time span in 2021.

There were 168 pedestrian accidents in Lexington in 2021, seven of which were fatal, according to Lexington police.
