Driver sent to hospital, Lexington road closed after car hits gas meter

One person was taken to the hospital in serious condition after their car struck a gas meter on Mercer Road Sunday afternoon.

According to Maj. Jessica Bowman of the Lexington Fire Department, around 4 p.m., fire crews and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the 1700 block of Mercer Road for a natural gas leak.

When crews arrived, they found a single vehicle incident involving a car and gas meter, which caused significant damage to the gas line. Columbia Gas responded and was still on the scene Sunday afternoon. Mercer Road is expected to be shut down for several hours while repairs are made, Bowman said.

She said one patient was sent to the hospital in serious condition.
