A woman died in a fire at an apartment building in Lexington early Saturday.

Lexington Fire Department Maj. Richard Harris said firefighters were called to an apartment building at 225 12th St. at about 4 a.m. and found the woman on the second floor landing “with heavy fire.”

He said that after firefighters got her out, the Fayette County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene. The victim’s name had not been released as of late Saturday morning.

Harris said four adults and two children in an apartment were also removed without any injuries.

Fire department Maj. Derek Roberts told WKYT that it appeared that a person without housing had started the fire in a stairwell to try to get warm.

He said the fire was contained to the stairwell, and all residents would be able to continue staying there.
