To help expedite clean up after a major windstorm hit the state last week, Lexington officials are opening two landfills for home and business owners to bring storm debris.

Trees and other yard waste can be taken to the former Old Frankfort Pike Landfill, 1631 Old Frankfort Pike, at no charge. The site will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday. The entrance is off Old Frankfort Pike.

Residents can also drop off yard waste debris for free at the city’s Haley Pike landfill, 4216 Hedger Lane. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Material collected at both sites will be turned into mulch. For either site, a Fayette County driver’s license or other proof of residence in Fayette County is required.

Residents can put debris between the curb and the sidewalk, which will be picked up by streets and roads crews.

There are two ways the city will pick up debris:

  • If you are on city trash pick up, the material you leave at the curb will be picked up as part of your normal weekly service as long as it is cut in 4-foot sections.
  • If you do not have city pick-up, or if you have debris that you cannot cut into four-foot sections, you need to call 3-1-1 and schedule a pick up. The maximum length the city can handle is 12 feet, and material cannot exceed 16 inches in diameter.
