More than $1.6 million raised for cancer research at UK’s DanceBlue Dance Marathon
The annual DanceBlue dance marathon hosted at the University of Kentucky raised more than $1.6 million this weekend, according to the university.
That’s approximately $200,000 more than what was raised last year. In total, the dance marathons have raised more than $20 million since the inaugural event in 2006, according to the school.
The money raised from this year’s dance marathon will be donated to the Golden Matrix Fund and cancer research, the school said. The fund was created by DanceBlue to support kids and families at the DanceBlue Kentucky Children’s Hospital Hematology/Oncology Clinic.
“Childhood cancer not only affects the child physically, but it also creates many emotional and financial difficulties for the entire family,” said DanceBlue on its website. “The goal of the Golden Matrix Fund is to provide care and support for the kids through giving them and their parent’s comfort.”
DanceBlue is UK’s largest student-run philanthropic effort. It raises money for the fund year-round, culminated by the dance marathon.
More than 600 students participated in the dance marathon, which was held at Memorial Coliseum. This year’s event was the first where spectators could witness the 24-hour dance marathon since 2020.
