Lexington to remove traffic light at key downtown intersection. Here’s why

Lexington will remove a traffic signal at the intersection of Jefferson and Short streets on Monday, city traffic engineers said.

In its place, the city will move to four-way stops at the intersection.

The intersection light will remain blinking on red for the next 90 days to allow travelers to get used to the signal no longer being at the intersection — a key gateway between the popular Jefferson Street entertainment and dining district and downtown.

If the four-way stop works, city officials will ask the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council to make the change permanent.

The city routinely monitors traffic flow and signal timing to decrease congestion. It has turned off and removed traffic signals at other downtown intersections in the past.
