A dozen horses killed in barn fire, Lexington Fire Department says

Twelve horses were killed in a barn fire early Friday morning, according to the Lexington Fire Department.

The fire was reported to the fire department at 2:14 a.m., said Jessica Bowman with the Lexington Fire Department. It happened at a barn on the 300 block of South Yarnallton Pike.

The barn was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Twelve horses died in the fire, according to Bowman. Additionally one person suffered minor injuries and was sent to a hospital.

The barn is a total loss, according to Bowman. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.
