FCPS bus sideswipes a car with students onboard. It’s the third such incident this year
A Fayette County Public Schools’ bus was involved in a minor incident Tuesday morning, according to police.
The bus sideswiped the mirror of an unoccupied vehicle in the area of Carlisle Avenue and North Limestone, Lt. Dan Truex with the Lexington Police Department said.
There were 28 students plus the bus driver onboard when the incident occurred, according to Truex. No injuries were reported.
The bus was headed to Bryan Station High School. There was a garbage truck on one side of the road and a parked car on the other side of the road, said district spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall.
“The bus clipped a parked car,” then stopped and waited for police, said Deffendall. There was no damage to the bus.
The bus continued transporting the students to school after it was determined what happened, Truex said.
This is at least the third incident involving an FCPS bus this year. They were all minor incidents and no students were injured.
In February, a Lexington school bus with 40 students on it ran off the road and wound up on its side “at an upright angle” in a ditch, according to officials. The incident happened in the area of Liberty and New Circle roads, according to Deffendall. There were children on the bus at the time, but both FCPS and the Lexington Fire Department reported there were no injuries.
In March, an FCPS bus was involved in a crash in the area of Russell Cave and New Circle roads shortly after 8:30 a.m., Truex previously said. Truex said the bus was heading towards Winburn Middle School on Russell Cave Road when a van turned into the bus.
The bus was occupied by 40 Winburn Middle School students, one bus driver and one monitor, Truex said. Nobody involved in the crash was hurt
Daily, at least 15,000 students ride 249 school buses in Fayette County, traveling an estimated 22,100 miles, according to the district website.
Truex said other drivers should always be aware of school buses on the road.
“We would always encourage people to pay extra special attention around school buses, especially regarding their stop sign and flashing lights and not to ignore those,” Truex said.
