Lexington city officials are cautioning motorists to avoid the area near the city’s waste transfer station due to construction.

Motorists are advised to avoid Old Frankfort Pike between Forbes Road and New Circle Road starting Tuesday, city officials said.

Garbage and other trucks waiting to enter the landfill will likely be backed up due to construction at the city’s waste transfer station.

The waste transfer station is where garbage trucks unload garbage. Other trucks then pick up the garbage and take it to landfills out of Fayette County.

Demolition and construction of the waste transfer station means fewer trucks will be able to enter the site, city officials said. Peak times for garbage trucks to enter and exit the transfer station are between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The construction on the waste transfer station is expected to take until mid-August. If possible, motorists should avoid that area, city officials said.
