84-year-old man killed in wrong-way crash on Lexington interstate
An 84-year-old man was killed after he collided with another vehicle while driving the wrong way on the interstate in Lexington Sunday evening, according to Lexington police and the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.
The crash happened shortly after 9 p.m. around the 111 mile-marker in the southbound lanes of I-75, according to the coroner’s office and Sgt. Thomas Johnston with the Lexington Police Department. Thomas Mollencop, 84, was driving the wrong way when he hit another vehicle, Johnston said.
Mollencop, of Lexington, was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m. from multiple blunt force injuries, the coroner’s office said. He died at the scene.
Investigators believe that Mollencop suffered a medical emergency, leading to the crash, police said.
The driver of the other vehicle, an 18-year-old man, was transported to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in critical condition, according to police.
A third vehicle was also involved in the crash, and no one was injured in that vehicle, according to police.
Police shut down the road while they investigated the scene and diverted traffic at exit 113, according to the Lexington Traffic Management Center.
