Lexington Fire Department conducts high water rescues after heavy rain
Two women were rescued from vehicles trapped in high water on Lexington roads Friday morning, according to the Lexington Fire Department.
The rescues happened on Old Harrodsburg Road and Bowman Mill Road, said Maj. Derek Roberts with the Lexington Fire Department. The fire department was responding to the report at Old Harrodsburg Road when it learned that a second person was trapped on Bowman Mill Road.
Bowman Mill Road and Old Harrodsburg Road intersect near Harrodsburg Road in southern Fayette County.
A 45-year-old woman was rescued from the roof of her car on Old Harrodsburg Road and a 76-year-old woman was rescued from her vehicle on Bowman Mill Road, Roberts said. Both women were safe and uninjured.
Old Bowman Mill Road between Old Harrodsburg Road and Parkers Mill was shut down for hours Friday, according to police. Roberts advised the public to turn around before driving through standing water on any roads.
The high water conditions came after heavy rain and storms in Lexington earlier Friday morning. WKYT meteorologist Chris Bailey reported that Lexington got nearly 2.5 inches of rain before 7 a.m. Friday. A flood advisory was in effect Friday morning for several Kentucky counties, including Fayette County.
More storms were expected to hit much of Kentucky through the weekend, with torrential rain, hail and damaging winds being potential threats, according to the National Weather Service.
