Car crashes killed 52 people in Fayette County in 2023, according to data from Kentucky State Police.
That is the highest number of deaths from crashes recorded in a single year in Fayette County since KSP began tracking deadly crashes in 2010. The only other time Fayette County recorded 50 deaths from wrecks in a single year since 2010 was in 2016, when 50 people were killed in 48 collisions, according to KSP data.
Twenty of the 52 incidents confirmed by KSP involved a pedestrian getting hit by a vehicle. Thirteen more were crashes that involved one vehicle, and another 16 were incidents that involved at least two vehicles. One other incident involved a bicyclist.
The majority of the incidents happened at night with dry road conditions.
Five of the fatal collisions happened on I-75 and New Circle Road, according to KSP data. Two other fatal collisions have happened on Richmond Road.
Twenty-one more deadly collisions happened at intersections, according to KSP data. Those crashes happened at the intersections of Harrodsburg Road and Old Higbee Mill Road, Man O’ War Boulevard and Rio Dosa Drive, Tates Creek Road and Garden Grove Walk, Polo Club Boulevard and Passage Mound Way, Elm Tree Lane and E. Main Street, Newtown Pike and Georgetown, Sandersville Road and Atoma Drive, Elkhorn Road and Buena Vista Road, Richmond Road and New Circle Road exit 15, Newtown Pike and Aristides Boulevard, N. Broadway and W. Loudon Avenue, S. Broadway and Foreman Avenue, Leestown Road and Chestnut Ridge Drive, W. New Circle Road and Russell Cave Road, Paris Pike and Carterbrook Lane, E. New Circle Road and Alumni Drive, Alumni Drive and Chinoe Road, North Broadway and Fourth Street, Nicholasville Road and Rosemont Garden, S. Upper Street and W. High Street and Tates Creek Road and Hartland Parkway.

In 2022, there were 35 fatal collisions resulting in 38 deaths in Lexington, according to KSP data. That number had gone down from 42 deaths in 2021.
February and September were the worst months for fatal crashes last year with seven, according to KSP data. The next highest monthly total was April and August with six.
