Heat will alter Lexington’s trash collection schedule this week
City trash pickup for Lexington residents will begin an hour earlier this week because of rising temperatures.
The city said Tuesday that it will extend its early waste collection schedule through Friday. The city had previously announced that sanitation workers would begin earlier Monday and Tuesday.
Highs in Lexington are expected in the mid-90s this week, with heat index values of over 100 degrees Thursday and Friday, the National Weather Service said in a Hazardous Weather Outlook statement Tuesday. The weather service said the hottest days will come toward the end of the week.
Sanitation employees will begin waste collection at about 4:30 a.m., or maybe a bit earlier through Friday, which will allow them to work before the hottest part of the day, when the heat index is expected to be “in the danger category,” the city said in a news release.
The city said in a news release that people should put their waste bins out the night before.
Residents can sign up for text alerts about changes to the waste collection schedule by texting “your regular collection day (MONDAY, TUESDAY, THURSDAY or FRIDAY) to 888777,” according to the release. To sign up for email alerts, visit LexingtonKY.gov/311alerts.
