Updated: 1 man dead in a Lexington shooting, coroner says
One man has died after being shot multiple times in Lexington, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.
The shooting was reported Friday morning around 8:20 a.m. in the 100 block of Trade Street, just off Leestown Road, according to The Lexington Police Department. Police had a heavy presence in the area, and the incident appeared to have occurred in a parking lot between two warehouses on the block.
Police said they found a man dead from a gunshot wound in a parking lot when they arrived, located between Koch Air and Ardent Industrial Equipment, two businesses in the area.
Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn confirmed the victim was a man in his late 20s who suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He added there was an altercation between the victim and a suspect before the shooting.
Ginn later confirmed the victim was Kristopher Caylin Walker Lewis, 28. He was declared dead at 8:50 a.m.
The police department’s robbery/homicide unit was investigating the case. Ginn said multiple people have been interviewed.
Ginn said he’s investigated homicides in industrial areas previously, but it’s unusual.
“It’s not rare, it happens, but for it to happen like this — it’s not real frequent is what I’ll say,” Ginn said.
It’s the 20th homicide of the year in Lexington. Last year the city reported its 20th homicide on May 25. At this point a year ago, the city had reported 36 killings.
Police confirmed it was investigating the shooting as a homicide later Friday morning.
