Police: Charges not expected after crash that killed pioneering Lexington broadcaster
Criminal charges are not expected to be filed after a car crash that killed a longtime Lexington broadcaster, the Lexington Police Department confirmed.
The crash happened at the intersection of Alumni Drive and Chinoe Road during rush hour traffic Tuesday. Five vehicles were involved in the collision and three people were taken to a local hospital, including 90-year-old Sue Wylie. She later died at the hospital.
LPD said the crash was still under investigation Wednesday afternoon.
“The collision is currently under investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit,” LPD spokesperson Hannah Sloan said. “At this time, no criminal charges are expected.”
A fatal collision hasn’t been reported at the intersection of Alumni Drive and Chinoe Road since at least 2018, which is the oldest data available from Lexington police. There have been seven collision in or near that intersection this year, according to Kentucky State Police data. Three of those, including the crash that killed Wylie, involved injuries.
Wylie was the first female anchor at WLEX, Channel 18, where she worked from 1968 to 1998. She worked at several other local TV news stations prior to that across different markets. She interviewed presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, along with several other prominent political figures.
She was inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame in 1999. Wylie has been remembered this week as an “icon” and a “force” in the industry by others in print and broadcast journalism.
