Lexington Animal Control rescues ‘spunky’ husky from sewer drain. ‘Absolutely adorable’
Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control had an unusual, but adorable, task this weekend: rescuing a husky from a storm drain.
Sebastian the husky found himself trapped inside a sewer drain in Lexington Sunday morning. After receiving several calls around 9 a.m., Animal Control was able to remove him from the drain and get him to their facilities safely, according to a Facebook post.
“The husky, named Sebastian, had always wanted to meet the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but instead, found himself face to face with a couple of Animal Control Officers!” Animal Control wrote in the post.
Lt. Jai Hamilton with Animal Care and Control was one of the officers who went to Allen Drive to rescue the dog. Sebastian “was very vocal. He obviously needed and wanted help,” she said.
Video of the rescue shows “spunky Sebastian” sticking his head out of a concrete sewer drain, with officers working to remove him safely. The post on Facebook gathered attention, with more than 25,000 views as of Monday morning.
Hamilton said that as far as rescues go, it was “a pretty easy save.” They were able to use a crowbar to pop the manhole cover off, then went down into the drain to get Sebastian out.
“He was super happy, and made a lot of noise,” Hamilton said. “He is just absolutely adorable.”
Hamilton said they don’t know exactly how Sebastian ended up in the drain, but her best guess is he was chasing something like a small animal through a drain pipe, saw the light from the sewer drain and got stuck.
The story, thankfully, has a happy ending. Sebastian’s owner contacted Animal Control and is picking him up on Monday, Hamilton said.
“This was a really fun call for us, because our job can be very sad,” Hamilton said. “We love helping animals and we are always out and about in the community, and any time we can help an animal, we do everything we can.”
