Updated: Two children, a parent hit by car near elementary school in Lexington
Two kindergarten students and a father were hit by a car near an elementary school in Lexington Friday morning, according to the Lexington Police Department.
The collision happened around 7:18 a.m. on W. Second Street at the intersection of Bruce Street, which is near Harrison Elementary School. Lt. Dan Truex with the Lexington Police Department said the two children and the man were crossing the street when they were hit by the car.
The children are 5 and 6-year-old kindergarten students at Harrison Elementary School, according to Dia Davidson-Smith, a spokesperson for Fayette County Public Schools. One of the children is the man’s son and the other child is a neighbor, Davidson-Smith said.
The driver of the vehicle was a 91-year-old woman, according to Davidson-Smith.
The three were heading to the school when the collision occurred, Davidson-Smith said.
One of the children suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital, according to Truex. The other child and man went to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
It’s unknown whether or not the pedestrians were in a crosswalk when the collision occurred. Truex said charges were not expected to be filed as of Friday morning.
“We would certainly encourage drivers to be cautious at any time, especially during school hours,” Truex said.
An investigation was ongoing Friday.
Davidson-Smith said the school district’s crisis response team is at Harrison Elementary School to assist with any students or staff members needing assistance.
“This team provides extra support during times of distress,” Davidson-Smith said in a press release.
