Lexington man dies after suffering smoke inhalation in a fire, coroner’s office says
A Lexington man died Monday in a structure fire, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.
Damon Edens, 47, of Lexington, was declared dead at the scene of the fire at 12:33 a.m., according to the coroner’s office. The fire happened at 130 W. New Circle Road, the site of a Mattress Overstock store in a shopping center, the coroner’s office said, though firefighters said they found Edens in a shed.
Edens’ death was labeled as an accident, the coroner’s office said.
Lexington Fire Department District Major Derek Roberts said firefighters were responding to a report of smoke in the area when they found a shed on fire. Firefighters found Edens while searching the structure.
Edens was removed from the shed but it was determined he was dead after a medical assessment, according to Roberts. Edens suffered full thickness burns, Roberts said, also known as third-degree burns.
The cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation, Roberts said.
