Fayette County’s Black history is rich and complex.

Thanks largely to the work of dedicated scholars, amateur historians and the Black community, more is now known about some of Lexington’s earliest Black activists, entrepreneurs, neighborhoods and athletes.

Did you know Lexington’s Historic South Hill neighborhood was one of the few city neighborhoods that allowed freed Black people to purchase property? It was home to some of the city’ s most prominent Black residents.
