Weekend structure fire in Lexington that left one woman dead remains under investigation

One woman was killed in an apartment fire in Lexington Sunday, according to the Lexington Fire Department.

The fire happened around 4:30 p.m. at Ridgewood Apartments on Fort Harrods Drive. Battalion Chief Derek Roberts said a neighbor noticed a burning smell inside one of the buildings, and when firefighters arrived they found a structure fire.

The main part of the fire was in the unit’s kitchen. Roberts said firefighters were able to quickly extinguish that part of the fire and search the unit, which is when they found the victim in a bathroom.

The woman was removed from the unit and the Fayette County Coroner’s Office was notified, according to Roberts. The coroner’s office will release the victim’s identity after immediate family is notified.

“Fire investigators are on-scene to determine origin and cause. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” Roberts told the Herald-Leader Monday morning.
