Ahead of Rupp Arena show, pop star Olivia Rodrigo shows support for Kamala Harris
Global pop star Olivia Rodrigo is in Lexington for a stop on her “Guts” world tour, but she isn’t just spending her time rehearsing.
Rodrigo showed support for Vice President Kamala Harris Tuesday night on her Instagram account, which has 37.6 million followers.
Rodrigo shared a video from The News Movement that showed a speech in which Harris discussed her stance on protecting reproductive rights, and Rodrigo added supportive emojis to the video.
It’s the latest instance of Rodrigo, 21, using her platform to support reproductive freedom.
After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, she told concertgoers at the Glastonbury Music Festival in England: “I’m devastated and terrified that so many women and so many girls are going to die because of this.”
Organizers also passed out emergency contraception and condoms at Rodrigo’s concerts earlier this year until the initiative was canceled amid backlash.
Rodrigo’s Rupp Arena show is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Other familiar faces have also endorsed Harris since President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race this past weekend, too.
George Clooney
Clooney, an actor, democratic fundraiser and Kentucky native, endorsed Harris in a statement to CNN Wednesday.
“President Biden has shown what true leadership is. He’s saving democracy once again. We’re all so excited to do whatever we can to support Vice President Harris in her historic quest,” Clooney said in a statement.
The statement was released less than two weeks after Clooney published a guest essay for the New York Times calling for President Biden to step down and secure a new democratic nominee.
“It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe “big F-ing deal” Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020,” Clooney said in his essay.
“Let’s hear from Wes Moore and Kamala Harris and Gretchen Whitmer and Gavin Newsom and Andy Beshear and J.B. Pritzker and others.”
Barbra Streisand
Streisand, a singer and actress, supported the work of Biden and Harris in a statement to the New York Times on Monday.
“President Biden and Vice President Harris ushered this nation out of the Trump chaos,” the statement said. “I’m so grateful to President Biden and so excited to support Kamala Harris. She will work to restore women’s reproductive freedom and continue with the accomplishments begun in the Biden-Harris administration.”
Streisand called Biden “an honorable and compassionate leader” and said Trump “incited an insurrection against our democracy.”
She also said Trump is “a convicted felon” and a “pathological liar,” according to the statement to the NYT.
