A Fayette County Detention Center inmate died while in custody Tuesday evening, according to jail staff.

Shortly after 7 p.m. jail staff noticed William Lane III, 47, in acute medical distress, according to jail officials. Jail staff and YesCare Medical staff members immediately called 911 for additional assistance but all revival attempts were unsuccessful.

Lane was pronounced dead by the Fayette County Coroner’s Office at 8 p.m., according to jail officials.

Lane had been incarcerated since Aug. 13 on charges of fourth-degree assault (domestic violence) and failure to appear, according to jail officials.

The Lexington Police Department and the coroner’s office are investigating Lane’s death. Jail officials said an internal review will also be completed by the jail.
