Multiple lanes of I-75 in Lexington will be closed for several hours while officials cleanup a semi-tanker truck wreck, according to the Lexington Traffic Management Center.

The wreck happened around 11:10 a.m. and was first reported by the traffic management center at 11:25 a.m. It happened in the northbound lanes of interstate 75, just past exit 113.

Just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Fayette County Public Schools district spokesperson Dia Davidson-Smith said she sent families a recorded message alerting them to possible school bus delays.

“We are being proactive and letting families know through a recorded message that I just recorded, there may be delays due to the major accident on I-75 today. So far, things are moving, but we wanted families to be prepared, just in case,” Davidson-Smith said.

Battalion Chief Derek Roberts with the Lexington Fire Department said a large tanker truck rolled on its side and caught fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and no injuries were reported.

Initially all northbound lanes were shut down but officials were able to open up one lane of the road, according to the traffic management center. With the rush-hour commute approaching, the other two lanes and the the entrance ramp to northbound I-75 from Paris Pike will remain closed for several hours while officials clean up the scene.

The traffic management center said traffic on the interstate is backed up to mile-marker 108. There is also heavy congestion on nearby New Circle Road between Winchester Road and Newtown Pike as a result of the wreck.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s interactive traffic map shows heavy traffic on the interstate and New Circle Road as well.
