Lexington’s Recycle Center to shut down Dec. 4. Here’s what to do with recycling
Lexington’s recycling center will be closed for 10 days in December for major repairs.
The center will close from Dec. 4 to 15 to replace a baler -- which compresses recyclables into large blocks -- and other equipment. During that time period, any objects placed in the recycling bin will be taken to the landfill, city officials said.
If people are able to, they can hold on to recyclables until service resumes Dec. 16.
Priority items to hold include aluminum and steel cans and cardboard. Glass, paper and plastic are lower priority items.
The shut down affects more than just Lexington.
The shutdown impacts all communities that send their recyclables to the Lexington Recycle Center.
Partner communities include Anderson County, Berea, Boyle County, Clark County, Danville, Frankfort, Franklin County, Georgetown, Harrison County, Harrodsburg, Jessamine County, Lawrenceburg, Madison County, Montgomery County, Nicholasville, Scott County, Shelby County, Shelbyville, Simpsonville, Versailles and Winchester.
The city has had issues with the baler over the years, leading to shut downs at the Thompson Road facility multiple times over several years.
At the same time the city is replacing the baler, it is also replacing a fabric structure over the tipping floor, where trucks dump recycling. The fabric structure keeps the recycling dry.
For those with city waste collection, the last day to put out material for recycling until the center reopens on Dec. 16 is:
- Monday collection: Monday, Dec. 2
- Tuesday collection: Tuesday, Dec. 3
- Thursday or Friday collection: Wednesday, Nov. 27. There is no city waste collection on Thursday, Nov. 28 or Friday, Nov. 29 due to Thanksgiving.
