Lexington’s Good Giving Challenge wants to raise $3 million in four days. How to donate

Good Giving Challenge

Now is the time to give to local nonprofits.

The Blue Grass Community Foundation, Smiley Pete Publishing and the city of Lexington kicked off the annual Good Giving Challenge Tuesday to encourage people to give and support hundreds of local nonprofits.

The four-day online fundraising event has been a boon to local nonprofits since its inception in 2011. More than $23 million has been raised through the event over the past 13 years.

The event starts on Dec. 3 (known as Giving Tuesday), which is a nationwide charitable fundraising event. Lexington’s Good Giving Challenge ends Friday.

In 2023, 11,797 donors raised $2.67 million for 195 local nonprofits, according to Good Giving statistics.

This year the goal is to raise $3 million.

Charitable donations can be deducted from income taxes, but those donations must be made by the end of the year to get tax benefits, organizers have cautioned.

This year, multiple foundations and other groups also have stepped up to provide matching donations or prizes to spur more giving.

For example, the Murray Foundation has pledged $100,000 to match donations to nonprofits on a pro rata basis. Nearly every day of the four-day event there are special bonuses and prizes for nonprofits participating in the challenge, according to Good Giving Challenge organizers.
