Lexington and Central Kentucky residents woke to light snow on Wednesday, and drivers could hit snow squalls on the evening drive home later.

The National Weather Service in Louisville issued a special weather statement early Wednesday for much of Central Kentucky, saying a band of light snow was forecast to move out of Southern Indiana and into the Bluegrass, with minor accumulations in some spots.

The weather service said snow accumulations would likely be limited to elevated decks and rooftops because of recent warm air and ground temperatures, and that road temperatures were expected to remain in the upper 30s, giving commuters a break.

However, the service said bridges and overpasses could be slick, so use caution.

The forecast for later in the day includes scattered snow showers and some snow squalls developing in the afternoon and into the evening, along with falling temperatures after sunset.

The conditions could cause slick spots on roads where the snow showers and squalls cross, so the weather service cautioned drivers to use additional caution on Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The weather service said the time of the greatest threat would be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Temperatures are forecast to fall into the 20s on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, which could cause further slick spots, the weather service said.
