Soggy Wednesday and colder for the weekend.

That’s the weather forecast for Central and Eastern Kentucky as a return to more wintry weather follows mid-week warm temperatures and rain.

The forecast high for Lexington Wednesday is 46, but after dropping into the 20s overnight into Thursday, highs will range from the high 30s to low 40s in the region Thursday and the mid- to high 30s Friday, according to the forecast from the National Weather Service in Louisville.

Some spots in Eastern Kentucky are looking at big temperature swings, according to the Jackson office of the weather service.

The forecast calls for a high of 59 Wednesday in Pikeville but only 35 on Sunday, for instance, while Somerset is expected to go from 57 on Wednesday to only 37 Sunday.

The weather service said showers and thunderstorms would move across Central Kentucky on Wednesday morning, with heavy rainfall in place and gusty wind in south-central Kentucky.

That was expected to give way to cooler and drier weather Thursday, followed by a chance of light snow and rain on Friday.

The weather service said that after rain on Wednesday, light snow accumulations are possible in Eastern Kentucky from Friday morning into early Saturday, though it said only “minimal to minor” impacts are expected.

Further west in the state, the weather service had issued a flood warning for the Green River in Muhlenberg County. The river at Paradise was projected to crest Friday evening at 3 feet above flood stage.

The South Fork of the Little River at Hopkinsville was also projected to cause minor flooding, and there was an advisory in the Bowling Green area for flooding in low-lying areas and places with poor drainage.
