A four-vehicle collision on New Circle Road in Lexington, Ky. created traffic backup on Feb. 2, 2023.

The widening project for New Circle Road near the Leestown Road interchange will mean lane closures on both roads starting Thursday and into Friday morning, state transportation officials said this week.

The closures will allow contractors to install new beams on the New Circle Road bridge.

Beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday, contractors will close one lane of Leestown at the New Circle Road bridge.

At 9 p.m., one lane of the New Circle outer loop will be closed at the bridge over Leestown Road.

Then, starting at 10 p.m. both Leestown and New Circle roads will be completely closed, beginning with Leestown Road.

Traffic will not be blocked, but it will be diverted onto the interchange ramps to bypass the bridge construction area. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. on Friday.

The work is part of the multi-year, multi-pronged New Circle Road widening project in the Leestown Road corridor, one of Lexington’s rapidly growing areas.

The entire project is expected to be completed in 2027.
