Lexington’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been canceled due to expected bad weather, organizers announced Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Louisville is predicting wind gusts over 40 mph, and thunderstorms bringing up to 3 inches of rain to hit Friday through Saturday.

“While this was not the decision we wanted to make, the safety of our participants, attendees, event staff and volunteers is our paramount concern,” said Megan Moloney the parade chair. “The potential for severe weather would create difficult conditions for spectators, as well as parade marchers, floats and our stage performers.”

Festival performances, including pipe bag players, Irish dancers and other musical groups will instead perform at the Lyric Theatre starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. A full schedule will be released Friday.
