One Fayette County high school student has died and another was fighting for his life Saturday night after a head-on collision in Lexington earlier in the day.

Seven people, five of them juveniles, were taken to a hospital after the crash involving a passenger car and a pickup truck on Bryan Station Road.

Matthew Scott Perrine, 17, died at the hospital, said Lt. Brian Baker, of the Lexington Police Department. Perrine was identified by the Fayette Coroner’s Office Sunday morning.

Perrine was a Fayette County Public Schools high school student, district spokeswoman Dia Davidson-Smith confirmed Saturday night to the Herald-Leader. Another high school student was in critical condition.

All the occupants of the vehicles involved in the crash were taken to a local hospital, Baker said.

In addition to the person who died, Baker said one other person involved had life-threatening injuries, one had injuries that were not considered life-threatening and four others had injuries described as “very minor.”

First responders were dispatched to the crash in the 3500 block of Bryan Station at 3:02 p.m.

Two patients had to be extricated, and there was “extensive damage to both vehicles,” Battalion Chief Derek Roberts, of the Lexington Fire Department, said in a text message.

Baker said at about 6 p.m. Saturday that Bryan Station Road had been closed for several hours after the head-on crash but was expected to reopen soon.

The Lexington Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating.
