The widening of New Circle Road will mean lane closures on a key Lexington road and will likely result in traffic back-ups, Kentucky transportation officials said this week.

Starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Leestown Road will be restricted to one lane from Opportunity Way to Towne Centre Drive, near the busy intersection that leads into the Kroger Leestown shopping plaza.

The one-lane closure will continue for several months as contractors work on the New Circle Road bridge, part of a multi-million dollar widening of New Circle Road in that area.

One through lane and one left turn lane in each direction under the bridge will remain open. The lane closures will be in place through the summer, Kentucky transportation officials said.

When the New Circle Road interchange is complete in 2027, the project is designed to stop traffic back-ups on New Circle Road and the Leestown interchange, improving travel times in one of the city’s most rapidly growing corridors, transportation officials have said.
